The preparations for the 1999 meeting, organized by Prof. Jean-Luc Clément, are almost complete. The program, general information about the meeting and the site, and the registration forms were published in the last newsletter, and can also be found on the the meeting website at www.lnb.cnrs-mrs.fr/FRENCH/activ/Congress_ISCE.html, or the ISCE website at www.isce.ucr.edu/meetings. Please note that the deadline for early regsitration was 15 June, and abstracts are due by 31 August. Abstracts can be submitted by Email (preferred) or by regular mail (paper copy plus 3.5" PC format disk), formatted in MS-WORD for WindowsTM (*.doc), and/or as a Rich Text File (*.rtf). Instructions for submission are on the websites.
The organizing committee has made arrangements to hold the final banquet for the meeting in the Grand Tinel Hall of the Pope's Palace in Avignon. More details of this spectacular venue can be found on the website www.palais-des-papes.com/ANGLAIS.
The last meeting of the millennium, will be held in Brazil at Poços de Caldas, a city within easy reach of San Paulo, on 15-19 August 2000 (Organizers, Eduardo Vilela and Walter Leal). The meeting will be timed to dovetail with the International Congress of Entomology in Iguassu Falls, Brazil. Arrangements will be made for participants to be bussed to the airport at San Paulo for the connecting flight to the International Congress. Other scheduled meetings will be: 7-12 July 2001 (First meeting of the new millennium year), Lake Tahoe, USA (organizer Gary Blomquist); 2002, Hamburg; 2003, Israel; 2004, North America, site to be chosen; 2005, Asia, site to be chosen.
The 2004 meeting should return to North America; the Society tries to hold the meeting in North America once every 3 years because of the significant fraction of members who are based in North America. However, at this point, no-one has come forward to volunteer to organize and host this meeting. Should you wish to host a meeting please contact the ISCE secretary, Jocelyn Millar, for further details.
The Laboratory of Animal Ecology and Entomology invites applications for a postdoctoral appointment in evolutionary and chemical ecology, studying the evolution of host-plant selection in a genus of alpine leaf beetles - Oreina (Chrysomelinae). The beetles are chemically defended against natural enemies. They display a large variation in ecological and life-history parameters making them excellent model organisms. Our approach is a combination of ecological, genetic, chemical and physiological studies. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant field, such as insect-plant or tritrophic interactions, chemical ecology, population genetics and evolutionary biology. Some teaching in entomology is also expected. Position is for a minimum 18 months beginning in October 1999. Apply by sending a letter describing your experience and research interests to Prof. Martine Rahier, Martine.Rahier@zool.unine.ch (phone +41.32.718.31.37), University of Neuchâtel, Institute of Zoology, Rue Émile-Argand 11, 2007 Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Include CV, publication list, copies of representative publications and recommendation letters. Closing date, end of June 1999.
Dr. Andrew Meyerriecks has a complete set of Volumes 1-13 of the Journal of Chemical Ecology for sale. Enquiries to: Dr. A. Meyerriecks, 702 Leisure Ave., Tampa FL 33613-1835, USA, Phone 1-813-961-6319.
Dr. Walter Soares Leal is head of the Laboratory of Chemical Prospecting and a Project Leader at the National Institute of Sericultural and Entomological Science in the Science City of Tsukuba, Japan. He received a Brazilian undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering, and graduate degrees in Agricultural Chemistry ( under Dr. Zenzaburo Kumazawa, Mie University) and Applied Biochemistry (under Dr. Yasumasa Kuwahara, Tsukuba University) in Japan. He is the first non-Japanese scientist to be tenured by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries of Japan.
Dr. Leal has broad interests in understanding and exploring the basis of chemical communication between organisms, particularly in insect systems. In recent years, in addition to the identification of many new semiochemicals, this has led his research group into the study of the molecular basis of olfaction. He has published over 85 papers, reviews, and chapters, and holds 28 Japanese and 3 US patents. In recognition or his work on "chemical communication of scarab beetles and its potential for pest management, " he has been honored by the Japanese Society of Applied Entomology and Zoology (1997), the Entomological Society of Brazil (1995), and the Japan Society for Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Agrochemistry (1994).
Dr. Leal is an ISCE Councillor and member of the ISCE Fund-Raising Committee, and is collaborating with Dr. Evaldo F. Vilela as co-organizer of the ISCE meeting in 2000 in Brazil. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Chemical Ecology (1999-2001) and the Annals of the Brazilian Entomological Society, and is a Co-editor of the Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology.
The ballot for election of Dr. Leal as Vice-President and President-Elect can be found on the back page of this Newsletter. Please return your ballots to Jocelyn Millar, ISCE Secretary, Department of Entomology, University of California, Riverside CA 92521, USA.
Dr. Steve Teale is an Associate Professor in the College of Environmental Science and Forestry, State University of New York, Syracuse NY. He received his B.A. in Biology from the College of St. Rose in Albany NY, his M.S. in Entomology from the University of Kansas in 1983, and his PhD in Environmental and Forest Biology from State University of New York Syracuse in 1990, as the last student of one of the ISCE's founding members, the late Professor Gerry Lanier. He received an appointment as Assistant Professor in the College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse in 1991, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1997. His research focuses on the chemical ecology of bark beetles, pine shoot beetles, and other forest insect pests.
The ballot for election of Dr. Leal as Vice-President and President-Elect can be found on the back page of this Newsletter. Please return your ballots to Jocelyn Millar, ISCE Secretary, Department of Entomology, University of California, Riverside CA 92521, USA.
